This time of year can be very overwhelming in one way or another. So many things to do on the run up to Christmas, party season, and every little thing in between that we have to juggle before the new year. It’s normal to let these things build up and cause us distress. However, when we start feeling overwhelmed or stressed out about something that is out of your control there are a few little breathing techniques you can do to slow that heart rate down and focus with a clearer head.
These techniques can be used at any time of year when you start to feel the walls closing in, or something is bothering you. All you need is to stand or sit quietly for a minute of two until you start to feel calmer.
Equal breathing
This technique is my favourite and I use it quite often when I need to calm down.
It is used to help calm your breathing and to replenish your body with oxygen. It is perfect to use when you are stressed or tense, and can be used anywhere and anytime you need to feel calm.
* Take a slow deep breath in for a count of 4
* Pause
* Slowly let our breath out for a count of 4
* Pause
* Repeat for as many times as it takes to feel calmer
Alternate nostril breathing
This is a common breathing technique that is sometimes used in meditation and can help re energise your mind body and spirit.
* Close your right nostril with you thumb
* Take a deep breath through the left nostril
* Remove your thumb from your right nostril and close your left nostril with your finger
* Slowly exhale
* Repeat
